OpenAI describes it as a remarkably capable, always-on agent built on GPT-6 Astra. Each person starts with a primary dot they can name and customize, and that dot works in the background toward the goals you define. OpenAI also talks about teams of dots collaborating in the future, although what ships today is the individual dot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The difference from a normal chat is continuity. In a traditional conversation, ChatGPT replies and the work ends there. A dot keeps ongoing responsibilities over time, and it can pick a task back up on its own, follow a fixed schedule, or react when something happens in a connected app. It also keeps its own notes about your preferences and decisions, separate from ChatGPT's memory and from the conversation context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

TechCrunch points out that much of the functionality already existed in Codex and in ChatGPT's tasks, and that dots bundles it into a more cohesive package with more autonomy. Visually, its floating bubbles also resemble Muse, Meta's agent that we covered a few days ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to OpenAI, a dot can investigate problems on its own, write and test code, update documents when requirements change, do research, and automate content production. It connects to more than 4,000 apps through plugins, and you can talk to it from ChatGPT on web, desktop, and mobile, from Slack and Microsoft Teams, with text messaging announced as the next step. The dot can also message you first to give an update, ask a question, or request a decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For marketing, the plugins most mentioned in specialist coverage are HubSpot, to create and update CRM records, Canva, to generate posts and marketing materials, and Shopify, to create discount codes and manage inventory. The workflow examples that keep repeating are turning a transcript into show notes and draft posts, monitoring competitors, analyzing why customers leave, and preparing recurring reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One fact worth keeping in mind for anyone managing advertising. According to The Keyword, neither Meta nor Google offers its own plugins for ads within this ecosystem, so campaign management goes through third-party solutions like Adspirer, a plugin listed in OpenAI's directory that connects Google Ads, Meta Ads, LinkedIn Ads, and TikTok Ads. That plugin creates new campaigns paused so someone can review them before they go live.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How safe is it to let an agent act on its own?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

OpenAI sets out several layers of control. During proactive research, the dot works in read-only mode and cannot send messages, change content in your apps, or control your browser. For everything else there are custom rules with four levels: act without asking, act only when you request it, ask before each action, or hand the task back to you. There is also an automatic review done by another agent, and certain sensitive tasks, like changing a password, always stay with the user.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

OpenAI itself warns that dots can make mistakes and that any important work should be reviewed. Its GPT-6 Astra system card, according to The Silicon Ledger, reports that scope violations rise from 8.6% when the dot chains five tasks to 19.7% when it chains ten. In other words, the longer the assignment, the more likely it is that information from one job leaks into another. OpenAI has not detailed what those violations actually involved, so the figure works as a signal of caution, not as a verdict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tom's Guide, for its part, showed cautious optimism: the progress is real, but more hands-on use is needed to know whether the value justifies the cost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who can use it, and how much does it cost?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Dots are available to ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium subscribers in eligible markets, and to Enterprise workspaces through a beta that the administrator must turn on. Free, Go, and Plus do not have access at launch. The United States is included. Pro users in the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom were left out for now, although Business Premium does work in all the regions ChatGPT supports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first dot comes included at no extra cost in those plans, with an extra allowance for deeper work during the first month. What comes after that has not been published. OpenAI said it will announce new usage terms when that period ends and that more dots can be added later, with no prices for now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to third-party price listings as of October 2026, Pro has versions at 100, 200, and 500 dollars a month, and Business Premium costs about 125 dollars per user per month, or 100 with annual billing. Consider a typical case, not real data but an example of how it might look: an agency asks its dot for a summary every Monday with the previous week's campaign performance, in read-only mode, and for a month compares that summary against the report the team builds by hand to measure how much time is saved and how many errors show up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
